Those Special Times: Labor Day... This month we have a day called "Labor Day" Our local
volunteer fire department has a fair this time of year, to help earn some money, to keep
the fire trucks up and running...I always enjoy these fairs...the community gets together,
works and plays together...its about as close as we get to how things "used" to
be...At the fair they have games of chance...which we almost always lose...but its still
fun...food...I like the food part...they have great french fries...and inside the
community building they play bingo. I 'm not much of one for bingo, but its
interesting to watch...some folks play as many as 10 cards...Last year I decided to try it
just once...I wanted to see if I could play ten cards...the first letter they called out
was B 5 or something like that....I found it on the first card and the second...as I was
looking at 3-10 someone had already called out Bingo....I asked how that could
be...weren't we on B-5...."Yup...first one," the caller had called out twenty
minutes before...if you get what I mean...oh well...so I'm not a bingo player...they got
30 cents a card towards the fire department...and that is what the fair is all about....I
went outside...and played throw the bean bag...you are supposed to hit the basket that is
20 feet wide...60 feet long...and 900 feet deep...(I exaggerate just a wee bit here)...and
of course I missed it...a two year old came along and threw in her bean bag....got a nice
toy....Oh dear! I was in the "you just can't loose" department for little
ones...they had a special toy for me...though, they pointed out, no one had ever lost
before...could they take my picture with the booby prize...a lollypop....what can I
say....Happy Labor Day!
